WOOD RIVER, ILL. (KMOX)-A heartbreaking, shocking story, that’s how Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Gibbons describes the case of a five-month old baby boy abused by his mother’s live-in-boyfriend.
Wood River Police Department Investigators were contacted by doctors at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center last December.
Gibbons says the suspect Alexander Brooks squeezed the child so tight, he fractured his ribs and he twisted the baby’s leg so much he caused several fractures. The abuse reportedly occurred while the mother was not at home. The injuries were discovered the child’s mother brought him to Cardinal Glennon for an exam. Investigators do not believe the mother had anything to do with the abuse. Brooks bond is set at $250-thousand. He faces two charges, aggravated battery to a child, he could get up to 30 years in prison on each.
A separate child neglect case was being investigated involving the mother and the same child. Gibbons says because of that, temporary custody of the baby was given to a family member of the mother. The baby was treated and released from the hospital.
