FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS–(KMOX)–No charges yet in Tuesday’s crash that claimed the life of a highway worker near Fairview Heights, Illinois, but the investigation is bearing down on the driver of a Honda that plowed into a work crew.
Illinois State Police say they are awaiting test results to determine whether Michael J. Jeter of West Frankfort, Illinois was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
A witness reported Jeter had been driving erratically, weaving through traffic, and then appeared “dazed and impaired” when he was pulled from his wrecked car.
The crash on Interstate 64 took the life of one worker, Dennis Beard of Pocahontas, Illinois.
Injured were two other Pocahontas men 39-year-old Kory Links and 32-year-old Adam Evans and 40-year-old Brian Moore of Hoyleton.
The workers were employed by Briteway Striping Services of New Baden, which was hired to paint new stripes on the highway.
Jeter himself was hospitalized, but his injuries were described as “not life threatening.”
