ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — With more tornadoes hitting areas far outside the tradition tornado alley, some researchers are calling for an expansion of Tornado Alley until it centers right on St. Louis.
The traditional tornado alley stretches from north Texas to the Dakotas but a company called CoreLogic says it should be expanded east and south, which puts St. Louis right in the middle.
Local National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Jim Kramper says tornado alley really has no borders and St. Louis already is in the middle of the danger zone.
Kramper says however, that over the past couple of decades, that zone has been expanding, “If you start looking at numbers now you can see there have been some really active times, especially into parts of the Ohio Valley and deep south. So, if you wanted to talk about tornado alley you could talk about all of the Midwest nowadays.”
Kramper says only time will tell if that is a long-term trend, or a blip.
