McCaskill Going After Vet Vote
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — With Memorial Day approaching, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill is making a campaign issue out of her work on behalf of veterans.
The Democratic senator from Missouri was to be joined by her mother Friday at a St. Louis campaign event highlighting her efforts to improve benefits for military members returning from duty. It’s part of her effort to launch a “Veterans for Claire” coalition.
McCaskill plans to begin airing TV ads on Memorial Day emphasizing her investigation of mismanagement at Arlington National Cemetery and subsequent legislation she sponsored.
McCaskill’s Republican challengers this year include former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, businessman John Brunner and Congressman Todd Akin.
Akin and Brunner are both military veterans, and Akin is chairman of the House subcommittee on Seapower and Expeditionary Forces.
