With the mega-numbers posted by “The Hungers Games” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Hollywood has been worried that some of the early summer box office potential for other new films will be a little less than expected. This weekend, there seems to be signs that’s a legitimate concern.
“Men in Black III” opened in number one spot with $70 million, but that’s about $10 million less than expected.
“Marvel’s The Avengers” was second with a healthy $46.9 million, down only 16% from the previous weekend. For four weeks in domestic release, “The Avengers” has totaled a staggering $523.6 million.
“Battleship”continues to descend with $13.8 million this weekend. “The Dictator” with $11.8 million and “Dark Shadows” with $9.4 million came in fourth and fifth. Newcomer “Chernobyl Diaries” finished with just $9.6 million, giving it sixth place. For the balance of the box office numbers from this weekend, click on the link below.
