ACKERMAN: Jack Buck’s 9/11 Poem Remembered

Tom Ackerman

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — It was an emotional time when I heard the news that Osama bin Laden had died.

I thought about the families of those that lost their lives on September 11, 2001.  I watched as celebrations broke out around the United States, cheering the death of the man who orchestrated that horrific day.

I listened as WFAN’s Howie Rose described the scene at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where the Phillies hosted the Mets:

And I remembered the moment at Busch Stadium on September 17, 2001, when we weren’t sure if it was too soon to resume baseball games following the terrorist attacks on our country.

This poem, written by Jack Buck — and read before the game on Sept. 17 — was followed by Mr. Buck’s question-and-answer: “Should we be here? Yes.”
