PLATTE CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City man who told investigators he fell asleep in the bathtub with his 10-month-old son has been charged in the baby’s drowning.
The Platte County prosecutor on Tuesday charged 36-year-old Charles Wells with first-degree involuntary manslaughter. Wells was jailed on $50,000 bond. His wife told reporters he’s innocent and the death was an accident.
Prosecutor Eric Zahnd says Wells told investigators he fell asleep in the tub with the baby on his chest the evening of Aug. 10, 2011, and woke up to find the boy floating in the water. The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Prosecutors said Wells had a blood-alcohol content of 0.105 in the hours after the death and told police he drank a half-pint of vodka before getting into the tub.
