ST LOUIS – The Missouri Department of Transportation have begun full closures or lane shifts on two major interstates in west St. Louis County that will continue throughout the summer. Motorists will experience delays during these work zones and are encouraged to use alternate routes. To avoid delays, motorists need to alter their travel times by leaving earlier for their daily commute.

Rock Blasting To Bring Interstate 270 Traffic To Screeching Halt

MoDOT closed Interstate 270 from Manchester Road to Big Bend at 10 a.m., today for less than ten minutes to blast rock as part of the widening construction. MoDOT has been evaluating the expected traffic delays during this morning’s first rock blast and are making any necessary adjustments. Traffic on northbound I-270 was slow north of Big Bend during this closure. Traffic on southbound I-270 was slow north of Manchester. The major routes like Manchester, Dougherty Ferry and Big Bend had minimal traffic back-ups due to the interstate closure.

Crews will continue to close I-270 from Manchester Road to I-44 for up to 15 minutes every weekday this summer (weather permitting) at approximately 10 a.m., and 1:30 p.m., to blast rock for the widening project. Crews will need to blast and then clear any rock from the roadway before reopening the interstate.

On Interstate 44, MoDOT has shifted two open westbound lanes at Antire Road to the eastbound lanes this past weekend. One westbound lane is closed around the clock in each direction until mid-September. Motorists can use the additional lane that will open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays for the evening rush period. MoDOT urges tractor-trailors and semi-trucks to remain in the right lane throughout this work zone. These lane shifts and closures are part of an ongoing pavement replacement project between Lewis Road and Route 141.

In addition, the entrance and exit ramps from westbound I-44 to Antire are now closed throughout June. Motorists can use the following marked detours:

  •      Motorists heading from Antire Road to westbound I-44 will need to take eastbound I-44 to Route 141 and head back along westbound I-44.
  •      Motorists on westbound I-44 heading to Antire Road will need to take westbound I-44 to Lewis Road, head back on eastbound I-44 and exit at Antire Road.
