ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 6, with a left shoulder strain. The team has recalled right-handed pitcher Fernando Salas from Memphis (AAA) and he is expected to join the Cardinals tonight for their series finale in Houston.
Salas appeared in four games at Memphis after begin optioned to the Triple-A club on May 26. He was 1-0 with one save, striking out five batters in his 4.0 innings pitched while allowing no walks. He allowed four runs on six hits, including a pair of homers.
Salas, who led the Cardinals with 24 saves in 2011, was 0-3 with a 6.32 ERA in 18 games (15.2 IP) to begin the 2012 campaign.
Garcia lasted just 2.0 innings in his start this past Tuesday (June 5) at Houston after skipping a turn in the rotation last weekend in New York. He is 3-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 11 starts this season.
