ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced Sunday that rookie right-hander Joe Kelly, who will make the start today in the Cardinals series finale against Cleveland, has been purchased from Memphis (AAA). The team also announced that catcher Steven Hill has been optioned to Memphis and that pitcher Chris Carpenter was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day D.L. to make room for Kelly’s addition to the team’s 40-man roster.
Kelly, who turned 24 yesterday, was the Cardinals 3rd round draft selection (98th player overall) in 2009 and he will be making his Major League debut.
The 6-1, 185-pound Southern California native has posted a 2-5 mark with 2.86 ERA in 12 starts for Memphis (AAA), working 7.0 or more innings in each of his last three outings. His 2.86 ERA currently leads the Pacific Coast League.
