BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOX)-A Belleville Police officer shot and killed a man Wednesday morning, after he refused repeated commands to drop something he was waving around, possible a knife.
It happened at about 10:00 am in the 7700 block of West Main Street.
Hunter Sieron watched it all happen. Sieron tells KMOX he came across two men in the 7400 block of West Main, “They were acting angry and were not in the right state of mind….They were jumping in front of cars, screaming at everyone.”
He says moments later they threw something through a window at Foley’s Tavern in the 7700 block of West Main. Then police arrived, “Then they ran across the street. The cops were chasing them. They apprehended the first guy. After that, the other man was running and the cop chased after him and got him. Then he was waving something in the air. The cops told him to put it down and then they shot him.”
Sieron says one shot was fired, and the man fell to the ground.
Sieron says the officers gave the man every chance to surrender, “He was just taking it like it was a joke.”
The other suspect is being checked out at a hospital.
No officers were injured.
The officer who did the shooting is 33 years old and has been on the Belleville Police force since 2004.
