STAUNTON Ill. (KMOX)- A Staunton, Illinois man who restores classic Corvettes and other vehicles lost them all overnight, when a brush fire quickly spread and destroyed his two garages and outbuilding.
Staunton Fire Chief Rick Haase says all three buildings at 4th and Madison were engulfed in flames when firefighters got there. He says the chemicals stored inside fed the blaze, “He had everything from fuel, oil, oxyacetylene tanks, other equipment and materials that he was using to restore those vehicles so naturally that increased the fire load on the buildings themselves.”
Haase says three nearby homes sustained some minor heat damage.
Nearly 40 firefighters battled the tw0-alarm blaze. One firefighter suffered a broken ankle on the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Haase says it does not appear to have been suspicious.
