Audiences simply didn’t buy the two new major releases this weekend, opting instead for an animated movie in 3D already in release with entertainment appeal for all ages.
“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” featuring an all-star vocal cast lead by Ben Stiller and Chris Rock, was number one at the box office for the second weekend in a row taking in a healthy total of $33.5 million which gives the movie a grand total of $120.5 million for two weeks.
Number two for the weekend was Ridley Scott’s sc-fi epic “Prometheus.” The deep space probe story brought back $20.2 million in box office receipts this weekend.
The curious rock musical set in the 1980s and starring Tom Cruise, “Rock of Ages,” opened number three with just $15.1 million.
In fourth place was “Snow White and the Huntsman” with $13.8 million, giving it a total of $122.6 million for three weeks in release.
