ST LOUIS, Mo (KMOX)– A new study shows a 23 percent increase in Type 1 diabetes among American youth over the past decade, and that has local diabetes specialists worried.
This increase comes in addition to the increased rate of Type 2 diabetes among young people, Type 2 being more commonly linked with lifestyle factors.
The executive director of the local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Marie Davis says researchers need more dollars to further the great strides they’re making
“Were are working on the artificial pancreas, vaccines new forms of insulin. We have been able to reduce a lot of vision lost so its exciting,” Davis said.
Last year, the American Diabetes Foundation estimated that nearly 26 million people were living with diabetes, 7 million of them undiagnosed.
