Movie audiences seem to want to keep it simple, fun and family oriented so far in the summer movie season of 2012. The top two films this weekend were both animated and something moviegoers of all ages could enjoy.
In its opening weekend, the new film from Pixar, “Brave” hit a bullseye with $66.7 million at the box office, and a whooping per screen average over $16,000. It features the vocal talents of Brenda Chapman and Emma Thompson.
In second place was the smash hit “Madagascar 3″ that took in $20.2 million. After three weeks in release, it has taken in $157.6 million in North America.
“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” came in somewhat lower than expected its opening weekend with $16.5 million. Audiences seemed to enjoy the unusual storyline, with many taking it is a dark comedy. The disappointing “Prometheus” was fourth with $10 million and in fifth place was “Snow White and the Huntsman” with $10 million. For more on the weekend box office results, click on the link below.
Opening next weekend are “People Like Us” and a film co-starring a stuffed animal called “Ted.”
