ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- The American Red Cross is putting out an urgent request for blood donations.
American Red Cross spokesman, Dan Fox says it happens every summer with hot weather discouraging blood donations, but this summer it’s really bad.
“Right now, the American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and donors of all blood types,” Fox says. “In the month of June, our donations are down more than 10 percent across the country.”
Fox says supplies on hand are half what they were a year ago, and 50,000 fewer pints of blood for the month of June.
“In an ideal situation, we would like to have at least 3 days worth of blood on the shelves,” Fox says. “As of right now, the blood that we’re receiving from our donors at our blood drives, is going off the shelves almost as quickly as it’s going on.”
Fox says they’re knocking on wood and crossing their fingers that they don’t have any natural disasters here or anywhere across the country that would require massive units of blood. In the event that they were to have an emergency like that, they would use the blood that’s on the shelves right now.
