ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- City Hall takes action to prevent drug dealing in a downtown park — by ripping out eight park benches.

The benches were dug up and removed from the Eternal Flame park just west of Soldier’s Memorial downtown, a move that’s not playing well on the street.

However, the City’s Director of Human Services Bill Siedhoff says the benches were removed for a good reason.

“There were a large number of people, around 15 to 20, that would gather,” Siedhoff says. “You’d have cars coming, stopping, leaving in a very short duration of time. I think it definitely looked like drug dealing.”

Siedhoff says after the benches were removed the problem has stopped. For now, he says, there are no further plans to remove benches from downtown parks.
