WASHINGTON, (KMOX) – Senator Claire McCaskill will not be attending the Democratic National Convention in September.

A statement from her office attributes her absence to standard campaign protocol, saying she doesn’t attend state or national conventions while running for re-election. She skipped the state convention this year because her mother was ill.

Speculation among opponents is that McCaskill is skipping the convention because she wants to distance herself from President Obama.
