FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL (KMOX)-Calling it a “war zone”, federal state and local officials are sending a ‘surge’ of agents and officers into the East St. Louis area to track down the worst criminals.

US Attorney Steve Wigginton says operation “Save our Streets”  will operate in East St. Louis, Washington Park, Alorton and Brooklyn, “FBI, ATF, Illinois State Police will target individuals who have a history of violent criminal activity and also street gangs that have a history of violent criminal activity.

“The additional agents that are coming in will help solve homicides that have gone unsolved. They will help target ongoing violent criminal activity as it occurs.”

Wigginton says they’re also going to reinstate the “WAVE” crime fighting task force. He says over a recent two-year period, that team made three thousand arrests and took 500 weapons off the streets.
