ST. LOUIS (KMOX)-We’re finally getting a break from triple digit temperatures, but health officials are warning us that we shouldn’t let our guard down just yet.

St. Louis Health Director Pam Walker says that while the break is welcome, the dangerous heat that built up over the past couple of weeks is still a threat, “These brick buildings in St. Louis heat up, it’s accumulative, and it takes a couple of days for them to cool down.”

Walker says temperatures at night have to get down to the mid-70’s for the threat to pass.

So Walker says we still need to check on our neighbors and the elderly.

And if you’re playing or working outside, it may not be as hot, but Walker says you still need to hydrate, take breaks and be smart, “I still want to encourage younger people, people who work outside, to adjust their physical activity time outside to either be early morning or late evening.”
