EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) -  Law enforcers in Madison County say generally speaking, they think they know who’s behind a recent rash of burglaries — drug addicts.

Captain Mike Dixon with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department says they don’t think the culprits are from the local area.

“These kind of burglars will come from as far north as Springfield, or from St. Louis city, over here into the rural areas to commit these rural burglaries,” Dixon tells KMOX News.

Their targets — easy-to-steal items which can quickly be converted to cash…which can then be converted to drugs.

“The burglaries are being committed at the same time, same type of entry, the same type of items are being stolen,” he explains. “Those items primarily consist of electronics, televisions, jewelry…and guns.”

Dixon adds that so far the burglars don’t appear interested in direct confrontation, although in a couple of cases bandits do use the direct approach by knocking on doors and trying to pass themselves off as students hoping to raise money for college or just asking for directions to a destination they can’t find.
