BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOX) – A Cahokia, Illinois man has plead guilty but mentally ill to the murder of a Centreville police officer.

25-year-old Lemuel Houston made the plea Friday in St. Clair County in the 2009 death of 59-year-old Lieutenant Greg Jonas.

Jonas was on patrol near the Ernest Smith Apartments in Centreville when he got out of his vehicle to talk to Houston and several others. He was shot in the back of the head.  Houston had told police he did not want to get arrested on a gun charge.

Sentencing is set for August 30th.  The state plans to seek a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
