FRONTENAC, MO (KMOX)-It looks like St. Louis’ newest Islamic day school will open this fall in a Jewish synagogue.
It’s not finalized yet, but the new Al Manara Academy is negotiating to hold its classes on the grounds of B’nai El Congregation in Frontenac.
Al Manara board member Phillp Paeltz tells KMOX that despite what some say, this kind of cooperation between Jews and Muslims is not that unusual, “We live in a world where we have loud headlines but maybe very soft, but maybe very real, daily interactions that in the long run may be able to overcome the loud headlines.”
B’nai El president Amye Carrigan says they have not reached final terms, but “The congregation is enthusiastic about the interfaith opportunity.”
Paeltz agrees, saying it adds to an already close relationship between St. Louis’ Jewish and Muslim communities, “There already have been activities between the Jewish community and the Muslim community particularly with the students. There have been programs the last several years where they have been involved. But, if we literally have working relationships where now we have Jewish people that are the landlords and we have Islamic people that are the ones fulfilling the lease, it’s our opportunity to say we can be good neighbors.”
Al Manara is scheduled to open in September.
