JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon appointment of Associate Circuit Judge Michael F. Stelzer to serve as a Circuit Judge on the Twenty-Second Judicial Circuit, which covers the City of St. Louis. He will fill a vacancy on the circuit created by the appointment of the Honorable Angela T. Quigless to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District.
Judge Stelzer has served on the bench in St. Louis since 2004, and has presided over civil, criminal and family court dockets.
During that time, he also has served on several committees in the Circuit. In 2009, Judge Stelzer was selected as the Best Associate Circuit Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri by Missouri Lawyers’ Weekly. Prior to being named as an Associate Circuit Judge, he served as the St. Louis City Counselor from 1993 to 2004.
“With his strong experience on the bench, I am pleased to appoint Judge Stelzer as the newest Circuit Judge for the City of St. Louis, and I am confident he will ably serve in this position,” Gov. Nixon said.
Judge Stelzer obtained his law degree from the Saint Louis University School of Law. He is active in his parish, St. Gabriel, serving on its board of education and as a volunteer coach. Judge Stelzer also has served on the executive board of the Gene Slay’s Boys’ Club Alumni Association.
Judge Stelzer was one of three applicants submitted to Gov. Nixon for consideration by the 22nd Circuit Judicial Commission under the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan.
