GLENDALE, Mo. (KMOX) – Police in Glendale are investigating a suspected murder/suicide in the 700 block of Hawbrook Rd.
Glendale Police Sgt. Bob Catlett said investigators believe mother Catherine Murch shot and killed her 11-year-old son Mitchell and 9-year-old daughter Mary Claire before turning the gun on herself.
The husband called 911 at about 11 a.m. Monday and told police he heard gunshots from inside his home and went to check outside, but found his wife’s body before he got to the door. When police arrived, the father was performing CPR on his son.
The children were taken to an area hospital were they were pronounced dead.
“It’s very difficult to believe this happened,” neighbors Roy and Shirley Gerdel said. “I mean, this man got up this morning with a family and he’ll go to bed tonight without one. That’s pretty drastic.”
The Gerdels said the boy was selling pizzas as a fundraiser for his ball team and they had just purchased one.
The children attended Mary Queen of Peace Parish School. A memorial service was held at the church Monday night.
The St. Louis Archdiocese sent the following statement:
“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic loss of life involving a family in one of our parish communities. Mary Queen of Peace Pastor Fr. Bob Reiker and Associate Pastor Fr. Craig Holway are working with grieving family members and the MQP parish family to cope with the aftermath of this tragedy. Out of respect, we ask that the media allow them to grieve privately. Counseling will be made available to the community. We ask that you keep the family and parish in your prayers.”
