ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Righthanded reliever Edward Mujica is the newest member of the Cardinals bullpen, acquired this afternoon from the Marlins with a little over an hour remaining before baseball non-waiver trade deadline passed. The Cards sent third base prospect Zack Cox to the Marlins for Mujica, who is expected to set up for late-inning reliever Mitchell Boggs and closer Jason Motte.
“Right now we could use some help,” Matheny said on his weekly radio show on KMOX. “Mujica’s going to come in and fill some roles for us.”
Mujica, 28, has appeared in 41 games (39.0 IP) for the Marlins this season, limiting opposing right-handed batters to a .211 BA (16-for-76). The 6-2, 215-pound native of Venezuela has posted 12 Holds and two saves this season along with a 4.38 ERA.
Mujica is in his 7th Major League season, having compiled a 17-18 career mark and 4.13 ERA in 287 games with Cleveland (2006-08), San Diego (2009-10) and Florida/Miami (2011-12).
Mujica is expected to join the Cardinals for their series in Colorado this week, at which time the team will announce a corresponding move to the 25-man roster.
