ST. LOUIS (AP)- The hot, dry weather is taking a toll on water mains.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that three water mains broke late Tuesday or early Wednesday in the city. Assistant to the water commissioner Jim Sondermann says the heat and drought caused the ground around the pipes to stretch and contract, cracking the pipes.
Several other St. Louis-area towns have also seen water line breaks, and the heat wave that began in June shows no signs of letting up with scorching weather in the forecast through at least next week.
