EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KMOX) -A woman who is nine months pregnant is lucky to be alive, after getting caught in the middle of a gun battle between her boyfriend and the occupants of another car.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore tells KMOX the woman was riding in her boyfriend’s car near 15th and Exchange, when a tan Cadillac pulled alongside and someone opened fire with an AK-47, and her boyfriend fired back, “We believe that her boyfriend may have been the target. We also believe this may be a drug war going on between the shooter and her boyfriend.”

The woman was hit in the buttocks.  Floore says her boyfriend drove to 9th and Natalie but fled, along with another female passenger, before police got there. They have not been identified.

Floore says possible .357 shell casings were recovered from the car.

The woman is in serious condition. Floore says it’s not clear if doctors will induce labor.

Floore says investigators believe they know the shooter’s name. They’re looking for him, the boyfriend and the other woman who was in the car.
