ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) –  Police have now identified the Metro East worker killed in an industrial accident over the weekend.

47-year-old Jay VanBuskirk of Edwardsville died after falling more than 50 feet from a man-lift while working at the ConAgra Food plant Saturday afternoon.

Madison County coroner Stephen Nonn says VanBuskirk fell from the man-lift, which he describes as a vertically mounted conveyor belt that passes from floor-to-floor of the facility, between the 4th and 5th floor.

Nonn estimates the worker fell 56 to 74 feet, adding that witnesses said VanBuskirk complained of feeling dizzy prior to the accident.

ConAgra executives have released a statement extending their deepest sympathies to Jay VanBuskirk’s family, while stressing that the “safety and well-being” of their employees remains a top priority for the company.

ConAgra’s launching an internal investigation into the fatal accident.
