GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOX) – Eight people were taken to hospitals Tuesday evening, after a semi tractor-trailer caused a chain-reaction crash on northbound Route 3 at Chain of Rocks Road.

Granite City police say the big rig rear-ended a Madison County Transit Bus stopped at a red traffic signal. The bus then hit the back end of a pickup truck also stopped at the red light.

Officers say the bus driver and five passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.

The driver of the semi was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck was also injured and taken to Alton Memorial Hospital. Police say he’s in stable condition.

The cab of the semi and the MCT bus both wound up in ravines. Rescuers had to extricate the driver of the semi-tractor trailer.
