ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If you get a mailing from a charity that claims to be raising money to help military veterans, you might want to think twice before contributing.
The Better Business Bureau says the fundraising consulting company hired by the Veterans Relief Network has a history of keeping most of what it raises.
Local BBB President Michelle Corey says that Kirkwood based Precision Perfomance Marketing often uses sweepstakes to raise money, mostly for itself.
“We have found that as little as three to eleven cents of every dollar donated to the groups they do fundraising for have actually have actually gone to the charities,” Corey said.
Corey says that according to IRS reports, the National Cancer Assistance Foundation got only three cents of every dollar PPM raised on its behalf.
She says that before giving to a charity through a mailing, you should read the fine print and learn all you can about the charity making the request.
