Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This morning, KMOX reported that St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is calling for tougher gun laws to combat the growing number of shootings in the city.
Meanwhile, the city’s top prosecutor is calling on judges to do their part to reduce gunplay.
Last year, some St. Louis circuit judges started setting higher bails for those suspected in gun crimes but Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce says some are not. Joyce tells KMOX she believes that the high bails not only keep potential killers off the streets longer, but send a clear message.
“Time and again we see people who have multiple ‘possession of guns’ who then get charged in a shooting case,” Joyce said. “By setting a high bond, you can kind of provide a high consequence for that from the outset and kind of nip that in the bud”
Police say many of today’s shooters are young and Joyce says keeping them in jail longer can make a real difference in their mindset.
