ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – In the midst of calls for embattled Congressman Todd Akin to step aside come cries for him to not give up.
Kerry Messer, president of the Missouri Family Network, says the controversy has united grassroots Republicans around Akin who has long been a favorite among home schooling organizations and conservative Christian groups.
“We need to prove that he really is our candidate, and this is not a decision for somewhere outside of Missouri to make for us,” Messer said.
Messer believes this latest controversy is “not a mortal wound” and that Akin can still win the Senate race, despite a new Rasmussen Poll which shows Claire McCaskill with a ten point lead.
Messer says conservative Christians haven’t abandoned Akin and that they now have a challenge.
“This has united them,” he said, referring to Christian conservatives.
“Right now, the grassroots are coming together like we never expected them to come together. And they’re coming together to defend Todd Akin.”
