ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Citing a health issue, St. Louis University men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus has resigned.

“Rick is in a California hospital undergoing evaluation and treatment for an ongoing heart condition,” Director of Athletics Chris May said in a press release. “His health is the most important issue right now, and our hope is for full and complete recovery.”

The university declined to comment further on Majerus’ condition.

Jim Crews has been named as interim coach for the 2012-2013 season. Crews was the head coach for 17 seasons at the University of Evansville and seven at Army before joining the SLU staff last season.

“Coach Majerus is not only a colleague, but a dear friend, so this is a difficult time,” Crews said in a press release. “We are fortunate to have a group of outstanding young men. This past year, they have been a delight to work with, and our staff is excited to serve them.”
