Cardinal George Remains Upbeat Despite Cancer Diagnosis

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. (AP) Cardinal Francis George says he will continue to stick to his public schedule as much as possible despite doctors’ discovery of cancerous cells in his kidney and liver.  The cardinal spoke to reporters Friday during a gala celebrating his 15th anniversary as leader of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The 75-year-old George says he expects to learn more about his condition early next week. After that he will hear from doctors
about possible treatments and whether they might include chemotherapy. George survived bladder cancer six years ago.  He says he intends to keep up with his duties as much as he can but that if he undergoes chemotherapy he might have to make adjustments.

At this point he says it’s “futile to speculate about that.”
