BELLEVILLE, IL. (KMOX) - Few details are being released this afternoon about first-degree murder charges against a 9-year-old juvenile in St. Clair County.
Reports indicate that the charges stem from the beating death of a 14-month-old child in Cahokia. Charges were filed Tuesday.
St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly tells KMOX that he is unable to give details in the case since the defendant is a minor.
“As in any case, we considered the evidence, our duty to protect the public and potential outcomes under the law before proceeding,” Kelly said in a press release.
By law, the minor cannot be tried as an adult and the case will proceed through juvenile court.
