COLUMBIA, Mo. (CBS St Louis) — A young woman who is dying of brain cancer is raising money on Reddit to get cryogenically frozen following her death.
Kim Suozzi, 23, was about to graduate from Truman State University when she was diagnosed with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme – an aggressive form of brain cancer.
In a post entitled “Today is my 23rd birthday and probably my last. Anything awesome I should try before I die?” she gathered suggestions on fun activities for her to do before she passed on.
Last month, Suozzi posted an update to her condition, saying the “prognosis looks pretty bleak at this point” and that she is now preparing to die.
She then asked the Reddit community to help grant her final wish — to be cryogenically frozen.
Suozzi — who only has as much as six months to live — said that she has “been interested in cryonics since long before” she was diagnosed.
“I never thought that I would have to secure the finances so fast, and without a career or savings to stand on,” she said on Reddit.
She acknowledged that it was “weird” to ask for this sort of assistance, but she feels that she “should just give it a shot and sees what happens.”
Suozzi isn’t fully convinced of the potential of cryogenics, however, she “would rather take the chance with preservation than rot in the ground or get cremated.”
“This is the last thing I can possibly do to fight for another chance, and if does happen to work, it will be incredible.”
She closed the post with the slogan: “Live again or die trying.”
In one week the group raised $27,000 out of the $35,000 goal.
The full amount will cover the procedure and transportation to the facility to where Suozzi’s body will be kept.
Suozzi updated her post in Reddit expressing her gratitude for the help, saying that she believes that she can raise the rest of the money before she dies.
