ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – We’re driving less and we’re driving more efficiently and that means less money to pay for the roads we’re driving on.
Rich Juliano, with the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, was in town yesterday to tell local construction companies how the problem might be solved.
“There could be the possibility of all sort of different things,” Juliano said. “In the long term, several years away, the possibility of a national sales tax of some sort.”
Other possible solutions include a raise in the gas tax or tolls.
Patrick Kozeny, President of Kozeny-Wagner Construction, says he doesn’t care which of the options is chosen, as long as the money returns.
“I really have no opinion at this point, I would just like the funding to occur,” Kozeny said.
Kozeny said the road side of his business is down about 60% from its peak a few years ago, and there’s not much to follow current projects like the Grand Avenue viaduct and the Mississippi River Bridge.
