CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – The University of Illinois plans to install a new $6.7 million scoreboard at Memorial Stadium that’s twice as large as the current board.
University Sports Information Director Kent Brown tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette the 10-year-old scoreboard is leaking and in some places is being held together by baling wire.
The replacement will be about 125 feet wide by 54 feet tall. The current version in the football stadium’s south end is 48 feet by 68 feet.
Brown says the money would come from the school’s Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. It would also buy another much smaller board for another spot in the stadium. Installation will take place in 2013.
University trustees are expected to vote on the planned upgrade at a meeting scheduled for Sept. 14.
