Prescription Drug Abuse Declining

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A new national survey finds prescription drug use among young adults is declining. What’s the story in the St. Louis area?

Dan Duncan keeps an eye on what teens and young adults are doing as a counselor at the St. Louis office of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

“What seems to be really big in the St. Louis area is marijuana use and it’s been that way for awhile,” Duncan said. “Also, prescription drug abuse. We like to think, perhaps, it’s declining due to the work done by us in terms of raising awareness but it’s really too early to tell.”

One thing that is clearly evident to Duncan is that prescription drug abuse appears to be a pathway to heroin use in the St. Louis area. He says a decrease in prescription drug abuse should eventually have a substantial impact on the heroin epidemic.
