ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A local radiation expert says we don’t really need to fear radiation exposure from our cell phones. What’s more alarming, he says, is the radiation we may be getting from x-rays and CT scans.

Dr. Daniel Cohen is head of radiology at SSM St. Joseph’s Health Center in St. Charles. He says if you’re getting an x-ray or CT scan, always make sure you are getting the safest and lowest radiation exposure possible.

“And particularly for young kids and pregnant woman, you may want to ask your doctor ‘do I really need this test or is there another way to find this, can we use an ultrasound which uses no radiation, can we use an MRI which also doesn’t employ x-ray radiation at all?'”

Even so, Dr. Cohen says, put your radiation fears in perspective. He says there’s a 1-in-5 chance of developing cancer and dying from it over our lifetimes while the risk of getting cancer from an x-ray or CT scan is 1 in 10,000.
