ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Area cyclists are getting pumped up for Sunday’s Pedal The Cause event to raise money for local cancer research.
Medical experts are currently using grant money from last year’s event to tackle pancreatic cancer research.
Dr. David Linehan with the Siteman Cancer Center is looking into ways to treat pancreatic cancer, which he says is one of the most difficult forms to treat because by the time it’s discovered the cancer is usually widespread already.
Dr. Linehan actually took part in last year’s Pedal The Cause.
“It’s a really terrific event, it was a fun event,” he told KMOX Health Editor Fred Bodimer. “And to have pancreas cancer survivors out there participating in the race sends a strong message that we shouldn’t be so nihilistic about the disease and we should treat it aggresively, while also trying to improve the treatments.”
This year’s event — launching Sunday from Soldiers’ Memorial — is expected to raise $2 million.
All funds raise by Pedal The Cause stay in the St. Louis area.
