Likeable TV (The King of Queens) and film star Kevin James may sound on paper like the perfect lead for his latest comedy film, “Here Comes the Boom.” But odd casting and a lumpy script that can’t smooth over this film’s very rough edges make the entire project a disappointment. The movie is not nearly as much fun as the marketing infers.
Kevin plays a somewhat undependable high school biology teacher with the hots for the school nurse, played by Selma Hayek.
When budget cuts are ready to kill the school’s music program, run by a kindly old teacher, played by the kindly old actor Henry Winkler, James’ character, who was a wrestler in college, decides to train to become a mix-martial arts fighter to eventually earn a big cash prize and save the program for the kids. (Picture Rocky with knowledge of science.)
“Here Comes the Boom” has some ring violence and James has a good sense of comic timing on several sight gags and delivering some of his punch (forgive the pun) lines.
Will the Biology teacher save the day? Will the music program survive? Will the school nurse fall in love with the fledging fighter? Will there be cheering?
What do you think?
