BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A stretch of southwestern Illinois freeway where two sisters were killed in a crash blamed on a former Illinois State Police trooper will be renamed after the teens.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports a ceremony is planned Monday to dedicate the portion of Interstate 64 in St. Clair County in the memory of 18-year-old Jessica Uhl and 13-year-old Kelli Uhl of Collinsville.

The sisters died in November 2007 when then-trooper Matt Mitchell’s cruiser crossed the median and slammed into their car. Mitchell and a couple in another vehicle were injured.

Authorities have said Mitchell was driving more than 120 mph and using his cellphone. He later pleaded guilty to reckless homicide charges and was sentenced to probation.

Mitchell now lives in Texas.
