EAST ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) - When police in East Alton found a 2-year-old wandering the street in a soiled diaper last Friday morning, they asked, “Where do you live?”.
The child pointed to a nearby home on Fern Lane and said “Mommy”.
That led to the arrest of 25-year-old Kristal Rushing, who pulled into the driveway just as officers were bringing the child home.
She was found to have cannabis and a pipe for smoking it in her car, and she tested positive for driving under the influence.
Meanwhile, the father was found inside the home — sleeping — and he said he didn’t realize the 2-year-old had wandered off.
Officers reported that while a second child, a 1-year-old, was found safe and sound inside the home, they were able to detect the strong odor of urine throughout the house.
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was contacted and the children were placed in protective custody.
28-year-old Nathan Woods, the father, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.
Prosecutors say Kristal Rushing has previous convictions for child endangerment and drug possession on her rap sheet, with the same 2-year-old child having been picked up wandering the streets just a few weeks ago.
