ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern died Sunday morning at the age of 90.
The Senator from South Dakota may be best known locally as the man who picked Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton as his running mate in 1972, only to have Eagleton step aside over past shock therapy treatments.
It’s the subject of a new book by Joshua Glasser called “The Eighteen-Day Running Mate.”
McGovern’s father played second base in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.
The Senator reportedly became a lifelong Cardinals fan and a member of the Washington DC based “Stan Musial Society”, a group that used to get together to listen to Cardinals games on the radio.
