ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- In the wake of the killings of two pizza delivery drivers in the last six months, undercover police officers are now delivering some pizzas in St. Louis County.
Meanwhile, another group of drivers are facing the dangers of their jobs alone: taxi drivers.
After calls to a few cab companies to find out what they do to protect their drivers weren’t returned, we asked some drivers.
A few told us that they often fear for their lives, but don’t refuse fares because they just can’t afford to. One said it’s especially scary picking up drunks, who may also be on drugs, because they “fight crazy like they can feel no pain.”
One said he recently became frightened when he took a customer onto an isolated east-side road, but nothing happened.
One driver told me he takes safety over money and refuses to give rides to some potential customers. He admits he profiles, and refuses to go into certain neighborhoods after dark. He said that his company doesn’t want him to carry a weapon, and he doesn’t, but he hasn’t ruled it out.
