ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Missouri representative Jamilah Nasheed is calling on the state’s attorney general to drop a possible motion to have George Allen Jr.’s case reviewed by an appellate court.

Allen, a 56-year-old, partially blind schizophrenic man who had been imprisoned for three decades, was freed in a hearing Wednesday, after a Missouri judge recently overturned his rape and murder convictions, lawyers said.

George Allen Jr. was sentenced to 95 years behind bars in the February 1982 death of 31-year-old Mary Bell, who was attacked and killed in her home during a blinding St. Louis snowstorm. A Cole County judge overturned that conviction Nov. 2 and ordered Allen’s release, ruling police had withheld evidence that raised questions about Allen’s guilt.

The Missouri Attorney General’s office asked for an emergency stay to keep Allen in prison so that it could appeal the judge’s decision to overturn Allen’s conviction.

Today, Nasheed penned a letter calling Allen’s conviction “a horrible wrong set right” and asking Koster to not appeal his release.

“It’s this decision [by Koster] that has ignited a firestorm of controversy and raised the ire of elected officials like myself who want to see Mr. Allen out of prison and with his family where he belongs,” Nasheed writes. “I join with Congressman Lacy Clay in calling on Attorney General Koster to do the right thing and drop this appeal.”

Nasheed cites Allen’s mental illness and “blatant misconduct by the St. Louis Police Department” in Allen’s conviction.
