Peabody Energy production of coal
GOREVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a 30-year-old man is dead after he was trapped in machinery at a southern Illinois mine.
The incident happened early Saturday at Willow Lake Mine, which is operated by a subsidiary of Peabody Energy Corp.
Peabody spokeswoman Meg Gallagher says Chad Wayne Meyers of Goreville died in the accident that occurred about 3:20 a.m. on Saturday.
She says work at the mine has stopped while state and federal authorities investigate.
Officials say Meyers became pinned by a continuous mining machine that he was operating. Saline County Coroner Jerry Doug Watson says Meyers was pronounced dead at 4:40 a.m. on Saturday.
The mine employs about 460 people.
