LENEXA, KS. (KMOX)-The new list of Missouri’s impaired waterways is out and it includes 258 creeks, rivers and lakes, including several in the St. Louis area.

Environmental Protection Agency Regional Water Quality Management Chief John DeLashmit says several kinds of pollutants can land bodies of water on the list, but the most common in neighborhood streams is bacteria, ”That can come from either a wastewater plant that’s discharging that doesn’t disinfect its affluent or what sometimes happens more often is run-off, when we have rain storms it washes animal waste and other things into the stream.”

DeLashmit  says some of the issues can be toxic for humans, others only impact fish and wildlife that depend on the body of water.  The list is compiled every two years. This year saw eight new bodies of water added to the list. One was removed because the state has submitted an EPA-approved pollution reduction plan for it.
